It doesn't reflect well on the health of our society that depression is one of the most common ailments. In fact, while walking to Bondi Beach a few weeks ago for an early morning swim, I was accosted by a man not demanding cigarettes or cash, but anti-depressants. A 2004-2005 survey by the Australian Bureau of Statistics for the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (1) found that 1,052,600 Australians reported depression as a long-term health condition. The extent of this condition is easy to see when it's compared with the incidence of diseases such as coronary heart disease (280,223), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (660,525) and diabetes (nearly 700,000).
